The Baxter homestead was on Pat's Island. Early in the book Jody breaks away from his chores to build a flutter mill on the Silver Glenn Spring Run. One bear hunt described in the book takes Jody and Penny to Hopkins Prairie. During the trip to these sites a ranger reads appropriate passages from MKR's work. The trip truly helps one fully appreciate the wonderful descriptions of nature found in the Rawlings writing.
